JAMMER ART – Sunsets
This week’s Jammer Art features sunsets and the works of Mighty Shiverscout, Twinkle Cottonivy, Daredevil Rockypenguin, Fabulous Prettyfox, and Snowflake Magicgirl.
Have you ever wondered what causes the colors of the sunset? There are tiny particles in the air that can change the direction of light rays, causing them to go in many different directions. This effect is called “scattering”.
Scattering affects the color of light coming from the sky, but the colors are dependent on the light’s wavelength and the size of the particle. Blue and purple waves are short and are easier to scatter. During the day, blue and purple waves can reach our eye from all directions, but humans don’t see purple waves very well. That is why the sky appears blue!
During sunrises and sunsets, sunlight passes though more air and has a longer path to travel on the horizon than during mid-day. More air and a longer path means more particles that are able to scatter the light waves. This can cause all of the blue and purple waves to scatter away leaving the red, orange, and yellow light waves, which are the longest.
