CREATURE FEATURE – Sea Otter

Dr. Tierney Thys help rescue a sea otter pup in this week’s Creature Feature!

Sea otters are adorable and look like they’re always having fun! But they are also extremely important. Sea otters are what is called a ‘keystone species.’ This means that their activity can have dramatic effects on the environment.

One of the otter’s favorite foods is the sea urchin and the urchin’s favorite food is kelp (seaweed) that grows in underwater forests of the ocean. If there are not enough otters to eat up all the urchins, then the urchins eat up all the kelp. Similar to forests on land, many creatures live in the kelp and need it to survive. If there’s no kelp then there isn’t a place for those sea creatures to live.

It’s also been recently shown that healthy kelp forests can help reduce carbon dioxide in our atmosphere by 12 percent!
It’s amazing to think that the happy little otter can have such a big effect on our environment!

JAMMER ART – Pets

!art_pets
This week Jammer Art highlights PETS and the works of Eternal Frozenflower, Mighty Strongcat, Enchanted Magicspirit, Fabulous Frozenmoon, and Lucky Rainybug!

There are more than 100 million pets in the United States. That’s nearly 2/3 of its residents being pet keepers. Some pets can also be helpers, like sled or seeing eye dogs. Dogs are very eager to please and can thrive with good training! Cats on the other hand are a different matter.
During the summer of 1879 in Liège, Belgium, the postal service attempted to train 37 cats to deliver sacks of mail to surrounding villages. Very little mail ever made it to its destination.
In another attempt at cat training, the CIA tried to use cats as spies in a program called “Acoustic Kitty,” launched by the Directorate of Science & Technology in the 1960s. After seven years and zero successful missions the project was canceled.
Do you have a pet? What is your favorite thing about your pet?
